What is Burkitt's Lymphoma? Burkitt's Lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma that is common in children. It is the most common cancer among children in Africa. Its cause is linked to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the main cause of infectious mononucleosis. Children affected with this disease often also had chronic malaria. The disease characteristically involves the jaw or other facial bones. It is one of the fastest growing cancers known to humans and can kill a child in a few months if left untreated. However, chemotherapy is very effective at destroying the cancer cells and Dr. Esther Kawira has a 85% cure rate with these patients. |
